    Quick Takeaways

    1. Australia’s eSafety regulator reveals serious gaps in tech companies’ safety measures.
    2. Instagram and WhatsApp received over 1,300 sexual extortion complaints combined.
    3. Young men aged 18-24 filed the most complaints; teens are increasingly targeted.
    4. Existing technology isn’t used effectively; stronger legislation is needed for protection.

    ### The Harsh Reality of Sextortion

The Australian online safety regulator, eSafety, recently released a distressing report on online sexual extortion. The findings expose severe shortcomings in how major platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and iMessage protect users, especially children. Between July and December 2025, eSafety reported over 2,000 complaints relating to sexual extortion. Instagram and WhatsApp emerged as the primary platforms, cited in more than 1,300 complaints.

Young males aged 18 to 24 filed the largest share of reports. However, it’s younger teens who increasingly bear the brunt of this harassment. eSafety highlighted that services like Apple’s iMessage and Snapchat are also being weaponized against this vulnerable age group. Victims face harrowing messages, threatening to ruin their lives and demanding money for “peace.”

    ### Technology’s Failure to Protect

Despite the technology available to combat these threats, platforms fail to act decisively. Many possess the tools to identify coercive language and monitor troubling content. Yet, they do not implement them effectively. Microsoft stands out as one company actively using comprehensive detection methods. Other tech giants are stuck in a reactive mode. They address issues only after they arise, rather than employing proactive strategies to safeguard users.

Dr. Joanne Gray from the University of Sydney emphasized that these companies need to commit to real prevention. Stronger legislation is essential to hold them accountable for their role in this crisis. Companies must prioritize user safety over profit. They must recognize that children are not just revenue-generating assets; they are individuals who deserve protection online. As reports of sextortion continue to rise, these platforms need to take immediate action to protect their users from harm.
