    Fast Facts

< May sound like background noise, but both music and traffic can enhance the vividness of imagined scenes, making them feel more real. < Music adds emotional warmth and can extend the perceived duration of mental journeys, while traffic noise incorporates realistic details into mental imagery. < Contrary to expectations, silent settings were less vivid, suggesting that everyday sounds actively enrich and shape mental scenes rather than distract from them. < These findings have implications for therapy and urban environments, highlighting how background sounds influence inner experiences and emotional states.

Background Sounds Make Imaginary Scenes More Lively

A recent study shows that music and traffic noise can make mental images feel more vivid. Instead of disrupting imagination, sounds often sharpen the scenes people create in their minds. When participants imagined traveling toward a mountain, background noise influenced how clear and detailed their visions became. Traffic noise, surprisingly, increased vividness almost as much as music, suggesting that everyday sounds shape our inner worlds. Silence, on the other hand, was less effective at enhancing imagination, possibly because additional sound adds motion and mood cues. These findings highlight how ordinary background sounds actively influence our mental experiences.

Music and Noise Impact Emotions and Perceptions of Time

Music adds a warm, emotional tone to imagined journeys, making descriptions more positive. Interestingly, traffic noise alone didn’t evoke the same feelings, but it still increased the sense of distance traveled. When combined with music, traffic noise sometimes reduced the emotional uplift, showing that different sounds have distinct effects. Additionally, music made journeys longer and changed how people perceived the passage of time, creating a sense of movement and pacing. Traffic sounds mostly affected how much movement was felt, blending into the scene and making it seem more realistic. Overall, background sounds not only influence vividness but also shape emotional tone and perception, which has potential benefits for therapy and city living alike.
