    NASA Partners with Industry to Enhance SPHEREx Data Return

    NASA is teaming up with the commercial sector to broaden our understanding of the universe. Recently, the agency collaborated with Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) to support its SPHEREx mission, which aims to explore cosmic origins.

    This partnership signals a shift toward commercialization within NASA. “The agency is making technological advancements while saving millions of dollars,” said an agency representative. These improvements directly expand human knowledge through exploration missions.

    NASA utilizes its Near Space Network and Deep Space Network—an extensive array of antennas worldwide—to receive data from its space missions. In preparation for SPHEREx, which recently launched, NASA needed to enhance an antenna located in Antarctica.

    To achieve this, KSAT upgraded its Troll antenna in Antarctica and integrated a cloud storage system. NASA then connected this new cloud system to DAPHNE+, its cloud platform for file storage and data management. This eliminated the need for costly underwater cables while streamlining operations.

    Every day, SPHEREx transmits a portion of its 20 gigabytes of scientific data via the upgraded Troll antenna. This information travels through KSAT’s relay satellites to DAPHNE+, centralizing access to SPHEREx’s health and scientific data.

    With SPHEREx’s orbit covering both poles, the observatory creates detailed 3D maps of the sky, shedding light on events just after the Big Bang. The DAPHNE+ cloud system integrates various data sources, facilitating efficient collaboration between government and commercial antennas.

    This mutually beneficial partnership enhances both NASA’s data connection to SPHEREx and KSAT’s integration into a global network. “We achieved a networking solution that didn’t require additional hardware in Antarctica,” said a mission manager. Now, SPHEREx operates at the highest data rate ever achieved from this location.

    This expansion heralds more reliable space communications at reduced costs for NASA and its commercial partners. The successful collaboration sets a precedent for future public-private partnerships in space science. As SPHEREx measures the light from over 450 million galaxies, NASA continues to innovate its processes for data return to Earth.
