CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — A historic mission is on the horizon as India prepares to send its first astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) since 1984. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a decorated pilot with the Indian Air Force, will serve as pilot for Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission. Scheduled for launch on June 11, the mission will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
The Ax-4 crew consists of four members, including former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson as commander. Whitson’s experience is extensive; she holds the record for the most cumulative time spent in space by an American, with 675 days. Joining Shukla and Whitson are Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, both of whom are also embarking on their first spaceflights.
This mission aims to conduct over 60 experiments, showcasing contributions from more than 30 nations—a record for Axiom. Interestingly, while Poland, Hungary, and India have seen astronauts fly, none had previously sent representatives to the ISS.
The Ax-4 launch represents not just a milestone for India but also a significant leap in its space capabilities.
