    Top Highlights

    1. New Long-Form Feature: Meta has officially launched a feature on Threads that allows users to append text snippets of up to 10,000 characters to their posts, aimed at supporting journalists and creators.

    2. Basic Functionality: The text attachment feature includes a simple editor with limited formatting options, offering a full-screen view on mobile and a dedicated window on desktop for better readability.

    3. Link Previews: Posts with links will show a preview of the linked content, part of Meta’s effort to enhance link engagement, although overall traffic from Threads to external sites remains low.

    4. Future Enhancements: While the feature is in early development, Meta plans to introduce more formatting options and improvements inspired by user demand for easier sharing of longer content.

Threads Expands Features with Long-Form Text Attachments

Meta has officially launched a new feature on its Threads app, allowing users to add text attachments up to 10,000 characters. This update comes just a week after initial reports of the feature surfaced. It aims to support journalists and creators who wish to share deeper insights with their audiences.

To use the feature, select “text attachment” from the post composer. This action opens a straightforward text editor, offering basic formatting options. Once posted, text attachments can be viewed in full-screen mode on mobile devices or in a dedicated window on threads.com. If the post includes a link, a preview of the link appears at the end, enhancing visibility.

This is a noteworthy move. Meta designed this feature in response to user behavior, as many frequently share screenshots of longer content from various sources. Reportedly, it allows authors and journalists to preview their work effectively. However, despite the potential, users should note that the current editing tools are somewhat limited. For instance, users cannot embed media or format the text extensively. Despite this, Meta has mentioned future updates may introduce more formatting options.

While some users may find these text attachments preferable to lengthy multi-part threads, they currently lack compatibility with other platforms in the fediverse. This limitation means followers from different services may miss these posts entirely.

Overall, this development reflects Meta’s ongoing effort to enhance user experience on Threads. As engagement with links on the platform grows, this feature may provide creators with new avenues for connecting with their audiences. With additional updates on the horizon, the potential for creativity remains promising.
