    Quick Takeaways

    1. OpenAI is gradually introducing targeted ads into the free version of ChatGPT, with about 20% of questions triggering an ad, tailored to the conversation topic.
    2. The ads are frequent, relevant, and include website links, often appearing after travel-related queries, but their format and frequency may evolve.
    3. Despite CEO Sam Altman’s past opposition to ads, OpenAI views them as a necessary last-resort revenue strategy to keep ChatGPT accessible.
    4. OpenAI emphasizes that ads do not influence ChatGPT responses or share full conversations with advertisers, though they are influenced by user questions and chat history.

ChatGPT Introduces Ads to Free Users

OpenAI is adding advertisements to the free version of ChatGPT. This change aims to help keep the chatbot accessible for many users. As a result, users might see ads more often while they chat. The company says it is testing this new feature slowly to learn how people respond.

    Frequent Ads During Conversations

During a week of testing, an ad appeared roughly once every five questions. These ads appeared at the bottom of the chatbot’s replies. Each ad included a clickable link to a website. The ads also matched the topic of the question asked. For example, after asking about travel, the user saw a hotel booking ad. These ads felt frequent but relevant.

    Variety of Topics and Advertising

The ads covered many subjects. Some were for dog food, printers, or streaming services. Others promoted travel deals, fashion ties, or business plans. Travel-related questions often triggered ads, such as booking options for Palm Springs or other destinations. The ads always tailored content to what was asked.

    OpenAI’s Approach to Advertising

OpenAI plans to introduce ads gradually. A company spokesperson explained that they want to learn what works best and avoid overwhelming users. The company also states that these ads do not affect the answers given by ChatGPT. User conversations are kept private, and the ads are based on recent questions and stored data.

    CEO’s Views and Future Plans

OpenAI’s CEO previously expressed dislike for chatbots with ads. He called ads “a last resort” for supporting free usage. Despite this, the company says the current ad rollout is part of a long-term plan. Recently, OpenAI ended some projects to focus on core services and improve their products.

Ads as a new Business Model

The decision to add ads may be driven by the need for a sustainable business model. OpenAI has been experimenting since February in the US. They emphasize that ads do not influence the answers and user data remains protected. This move reflects a balance between providing free access and generating revenue.
