Why I No Longer Trust LLMs on Weather

    Summary Points

    1. The core issue with weather forecasts isn’t accuracy but knowing when changes are truly meaningful, especially in chaotic systems where small variations matter.
    2. Using language models like GPT to gauge “significance” introduces unpredictability and unreliable decisions, since they’re not designed for deterministic thresholds.
    3. Skygent’s architecture separates deterministic, testable code from LLMs, using strict thresholds for change detection and only invoking the language model for explanation, not decision-making.
    4. This hybrid, event-driven approach ensures stable, explainable, and cost-effective detection of meaningful weather changes, emphasizing decision boundaries over probabilistic language interpretation.

The Limitations of LLMs in Weather Change Detection

Many developers use large language models (LLMs) to analyze weather forecast data. They feed forecasts into an LLM and ask if the weather has changed significantly. At first, this seems logical. However, weather changes are complex and depend on measurable variables like temperature or wind speed. An LLM, which is designed to generate language, cannot precisely determine whether a change crosses a specific threshold. It struggles with the unpredictability of chaotic systems, where small differences matter. This leads to errors, such as inconsistent decisions or missed important changes. While LLMs are excellent at language, they are not suited for precise, physics-based judgments.

Why Thresholds Matter in Weather Monitoring

Accurate weather decisions rely on thresholds that are clear and measurable. For example, a temperature change of 3°C might be critical for farming or energy use. These thresholds are based on actual data, not just words. When an LLM tries to replace this with probabilistic language, it creates uncertainty. Instead of definitive answers, the model offers vague interpretations. This can cause problems in real-world applications where stability and explainability are vital. Decisions need to be based on solid, measurable limits, not guesswork or probabilistic phrasing.

A Better Approach: Combining Data and Language

A practical solution is to separate the data assessment from the language explanation. First, use deterministic code to compare forecast data and check if thresholds are crossed. Only then, when a real change occurs, invoke the LLM to generate a clear explanation. This approach ensures decisions are reliable and explainable. It reduces costs by calling the LLM only when needed. This hybrid method balances the accuracy of measurements with the flexibility of natural language. It shows that, when it comes to weather, models should focus on structured analysis and use language models for communication, not decision-making.
