Why Wi-Fi 7 matters in 2026
Wi-Fi 7 is no longer an expensive bet for every household. Prices have fallen, and testing shows meaningful gains in speed, signal reliability and responsiveness. That can mean smoother video calls, faster downloads and less lag during gaming.
Still, a new router will not make your internet plan faster. And older devices cannot use every Wi-Fi 7 feature. Consider upgrading when replacing an aging router or adding compatible phones, computers or game systems.
Top Wi-Fi 7 router picks
Best value: TP-Link Archer BE550. It delivered strong speeds across three bands and offers a useful mix of performance and price. However, the FCC’s 2026 restrictions create uncertainty for many foreign-made routers. TP-Link models are not among the brands with exemptions listed as of Nov. 2, 2026. Buyers should weigh the risk that software updates may stop after Jan. 1, 2029.
Fastest single router: Netgear Nighthawk RS700S. It led testing on the 5 and 6 GHz bands and includes two 10-gigabit ports. It makes sense for multi-gigabit internet plans, but most households do not need its speed or price.
Best budget choice: Eero 7. It is compact, relatively affordable and suited to apartments or smaller homes. It lacks a 6 GHz band, though, and does not support a VPN directly on the router.
Best for larger homes: Netgear Orbi 870. This mesh system maintained strong performance across a wide area. It costs more than a single router, but extra units can reduce dead zones.
Choose for your home, not the headline speed
A single router often works well in a small or mid-sized home. For multiple floors or distant rooms, mesh systems can spread coverage more evenly. Place the router in a central, open spot for better reach.
Wi-Fi 7 advances home networking, but the practical benefit depends on your devices, internet plan and home layout. Also, check current FCC guidance before buying: As of Nov. 2, 2026, Asus, Netgear and Eero were the only consumer router brands listed as having exemptions from the new restrictions.
