    Essential Insights

    1. Zurich remains the top-ranked smart city in the IMD Smart City Index 2026, with Oslo, Geneva, London, and Copenhagen also in the top five.
    2. The index evaluates cities based on their balance of economic strength, technology, environmental sustainability, inclusiveness, and citizen trust.
    3. Higher resident perceptions of transparency and active participation in decision-making correlate with greater city satisfaction.
    4. Successful cities prioritize governance, sustainability, public investment, and citizen trust over mere technological or infrastructural advancements.

Zurich Tops the List Again in 2026

Zurich maintains its position as the best smart city in the world for 2026. This marks the seventh year in a row that the Swiss city has led the IMD Smart City Index. The index, which looks at 148 cities globally, ranks Zurich high for its balance of smart technology, strong economy, and good quality of life. Nearby, Oslo and Geneva follow in second and third places. Additionally, London and Copenhagen are now in the top five, showing other European cities are also making progress. The report praises Zurich for its focus on improving residents’ everyday lives through smart policies and sustainable growth.

Trust and Transparency Drive High Rankings

The report highlights that residents in top-ranked cities feel more engaged and trust their governments more. These cities excel because officials make information easy to access and listen to citizens’ opinions. Analysts say that city happiness depends less on flashy tech and more on how well leaders involve people in decisions. The director of the IMD World Competitiveness Centre explains that successful cities build citizen trust by matching their governance, environmental goals, and public investments. As a result, residents in these places tend to stay healthier and enjoy a higher quality of life.
