CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — Intuitive Machines prepares for an exciting launch on February 26. The company will send its second lunar lander, known as IM-2, to explore the moon. This mission represents a key step in commercial space exploration.
The IM-2 mission will lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at 7:17 p.m. EST. Interested viewers can catch the event live through NASA or SpaceX. The craft, named Athena, carries advanced scientific instruments to study the moon’s environment and resources.
IM-2 is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. This initiative engages private companies to deliver instruments and technology to the lunar surface. NASA aims to speed up exploration in preparation for future crewed missions under the Artemis program.
Recently, Intuitive Machines faced challenges with its first mission, IM-1, which launched in February 2024. During that mission, the lander tipped over upon landing. Nevertheless, it provided valuable data that will enhance future endeavors. The goal for IM-2 is a more accurate landing near the moon’s south pole, particularly in the Mons Mouton region. Researchers are especially interested in this area due to potential water ice deposits, which are crucial for future lunar exploration.
One of IM-2’s main objectives involves assessing local lunar resources. Athena will deploy NASA’s Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment 1 (PRIME-1). This tool combines a drill called TRIDENT with a mass spectrometer named MSolo. Together, they will analyze lunar material for volatiles like water and carbon dioxide, informing future missions.
Niki Werkheiser from NASA emphasized the importance of this demonstration. Obtaining precise data about the moon’s surface will help minimize risks for future resource utilization missions.
Additionally, Athena carries a micro-hopper named “Grace,” after computer science pioneer Grace Hopper. Grace will venture nearly a mile from Athena, conducting multiple hops and exploring shadowed craters. To enhance communication, a rover named MAPP will establish the moon’s first cellular network. This system, developed by Nokia Bell Labs, will test high-speed long-range communication.
Athena is also equipped with a Laser Retro-Reflector Array (LRA) composed of small mirrors. These mirrors will help determine the lander’s location on the moon’s surface and will be functional for decades without requiring power.
Once launched, Athena will embark on a four- to five-day journey to lunar orbit. Following its touchdown, the lander is set to operate on the moon’s surface for about ten Earth days. In addition to Athena, the Falcon 9 will also carry NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer satellite, designed to map water ice deposits.
The excitement doesn’t end there. Other missions, like Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost, are already en route to the moon. This surge in lunar activity aims to enhance scientific understanding while paving the way for a sustainable human presence.
