    Fast Facts

    1. Grand Prize Winner: Mati Carbon won the $50 million Xprize Carbon Removal competition with their effective enhanced rock weathering program, which captures carbon in soils for thousands of years.

    2. Simple and Effective Solution: By grinding basalt rock to increase its surface area, Mati’s technology accelerates carbon absorption when spread on farm fields, providing both soil health benefits and a sustainable carbon removal method.

    3. Empowering Smallholder Farmers: The initiative has the potential to enhance productivity for 200 million smallholder farmers globally, leading to significant agricultural gains and supporting the livelihoods of nearly 1 billion people.

    4. Sustainable Growth Strategy: Mati plans to license its technology while ensuring farmers reap profits, aiming for affordable carbon credits and expanding operations across the Global South to maximize impact.

Simple Solutions Can Lead the Way

Sometimes, simplicity wins against complexity. The Xprize Carbon Removal competition recently awarded its grand prize to Mati Carbon for its enhanced rock weathering technology. This method captures carbon dioxide by grinding volcanic rock, specifically basalt, and spreading it on farm fields. In turn, this process embeds carbon in the soil while also enriching it with nutrients. While many startups presented intricate technologies, Mati’s straightforward approach stood out.

The logistics behind this process are important. Mati offers basalt to farmers at no charge, funded by a mix of grants and carbon credit sales. The company anticipates delivering 5,000 to 6,000 metric tons of carbon credits this year, with a goal to provide more affordable options in the future. This grounding in community and support for smallholder farmers highlights a blend of economic and environmental sustainability.

    Widespread Adoption and Impact

Mati Carbon’s potential reach is vast. Approximately 200 million smallholder farmers could benefit from its technology, ultimately supporting around 1 billion people. Enhanced rock weathering promises significant improvements in crop productivity, with farmers reporting 25% to 70% more yield in treated soils. Notably, this method also enhances water retention, making it invaluable during droughts.

Despite its promise, Mati will need innovative strategies to reach all prospective farmers. The company plans to provide free licenses to organizations willing to share profits with those they assist. This strategy encourages widespread adoption while ensuring that farmers reap the benefits of enhanced productivity. By marrying environmental goals with economic incentives, Mati Carbon exemplifies how simple, effective solutions can lead to significant change in both agriculture and carbon removal efforts.
