    Fast Facts

    1. Decentralized Messaging: Jack Dorsey launched Bitchat, a peer-to-peer messaging app that operates entirely over Bluetooth, eliminating the need for internet or central servers.

    2. Encrypted Communication: The app enables encrypted messaging among nearby devices, creating a network where each device acts as a node, ensuring communication persists even when internet access is restricted.

    3. Privacy and Security: Messages are stored locally and disappear by default, enhancing privacy and avoiding reliance on centralized infrastructure, similar to technologies used during protests like Hong Kong’s in 2019.

    4. Future Enhancements: Bitchat supports group chats with password protection and aims to incorporate Wi-Fi Direct in future updates for improved network speed and capacity.

Jack Dorsey Launches Bluetooth Messaging App Without Internet

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, has introduced a revolutionary new app called Bitchat. This decentralized messaging platform operates entirely over Bluetooth, eliminating the need for an internet connection. According to CNBC reports, Dorsey calls it an experiment in “Bluetooth mesh networks” and encryption models.

Bitchat allows users to send messages directly between nearby devices. Each gadget acts as a node, helping to expand the network further. Consequently, users can communicate even when internet access is blocked. This feature echoes the tactics used during Hong Kong’s 2019 protests, where similar technology maintained crucial lines of communication.

The app supports encrypted group chats, which can be organized with hashtags and secured with passwords. Additionally, it can forward messages to users who may be temporarily offline. Dorsey plans to enhance Bitchat further by integrating Wi-Fi Direct, which will boost network speed and capacity.

Proponents of smart cities and urban innovation may see great value in this technology. Its ability to function without centralized servers empowers users, giving them control over their communication. As urban areas grapple with connectivity issues, apps like Bitchat offer a lifeline, ensuring people can stay connected.

Currently, Bitchat is available in beta through TestFlight, although access is limited. As decentralized communication grows in importance, this app could reshape how we interact—especially in urban environments. Users eager to explore alternative communication methods may find Dorsey’s latest project to be a significant step forward.
