    Essential Insights

    1. Google Maps Integration: Garmin now offers the Google Maps app for download on its smartwatches, enabling turn-by-turn directions directly on the watch display.

    2. Phone-Free Navigation: Users can sync their Android phone’s Google Maps to the watch, receiving vibration notifications for new directions while keeping their phone in their pocket.

    3. Fitness Tracking Uninterrupted: The app runs in the background without interrupting Garmin’s existing fitness tracking features, allowing users to simultaneously record activities.

    4. Limited Device Compatibility: The feature supports select Garmin models, including Venu, Forerunner, Vivoactive, and Fenix, while iOS users are currently excluded.

Starting today, Garmin smartwatches can now access Google Maps. This new feature comes as a welcome upgrade for users who often find themselves needing guidance while on the go.

From the Connect IQ Store, you can download the Google Maps app for free. This addition allows your smartwatch to provide turn-by-turn directions. Consequently, you can keep your phone in your pocket and stay focused on your surroundings.

When you enter a destination in the Google Maps app on your Android phone, your watch will sync with it. It vibrates gently for each new direction, ensuring you stay on track. If you prefer, you can also check the next three turns directly from your wrist.

However, iOS users should note that this feature doesn’t support Apple phones yet, despite the app’s presence in the App Store. This situation puts Garmin a bit behind competitors like Apple Watch and Wear OS devices, which already offer similar navigation features. Notably, Wear OS devices even support offline maps, allowing users to leave their phones at home.

Nevertheless, Garmin remains committed to fitness tracking. You can still record your walks, runs, or bike rides without interruptions from Google Maps. The new app works with select Venu, Forerunner, Vivoactive, and Fenix products—making it a practical tool for fitness enthusiasts.

Smart urban living just got a boost, as Garmin embraces innovation in navigation. With improved access to essential features like Google Maps, Garmin continues to enhance the user experience for its loyal customer base.
