    Top Highlights

    1. Youth Safety Priority: The EU emphasizes online safety for children, supported by new guidelines and an age verification app to help protect minors from harmful content.

    2. User Privacy Assurance: The upcoming age verification app will allow users to verify their age without disclosing personal information, maintaining their privacy while accessing restricted content.

    3. Collaborative Development: The prototype for the age verification app will be tested and customized with input from Member States and online platforms, with pilot programs planned in several EU countries.

    4. Ongoing Investigations: The EU is investigating major adult websites for inadequate age verification measures, underscoring its commitment to ensuring safe online environments for minors.

    The Urgency of Online Safety

Ensuring the safety of children and young people online has taken center stage within the European Union. Henna Virkkunen, a key figure in EU tech policy, emphasizes this necessity. She states that the age verification app prototype represents a significant leap forward. This app will help users verify their age when accessing adult content, making online environments safer. Furthermore, it addresses the crucial need for platforms to comply with existing laws like the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The EU aims to reduce risks for young users and confront platforms that neglect their responsibilities. Investigations into major adult content websites signal a strong stance on enforcement. These actions highlight the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding minors against harmful content, cyberbullying, and other online dangers. As a result, this initiative not only promotes accountability but also fosters trust in digital spaces.

    The Path to Widespread Adoption

The age verification app prototype will undergo testing alongside various stakeholders, including Member States and online platforms. Countries like Denmark, Greece, Spain, France, and Italy plan to introduce their versions. This collaborative approach ensures that the app meets diverse needs across Europe. Users will maintain control over their personal information, such as their identity and exact age, which addresses privacy concerns.

While this app is a temporary solution, it lays the groundwork for the future EU Digital Identity Wallet set to launch in 2026. This wallet will not only enhance secure verification but also facilitate the sharing of important documents. By implementing practical measures now, the EU can make significant strides towards a safer digital landscape. The age verification app offers a forward-looking solution that contributes meaningfully to the ongoing evolution of internet safety and accountability.
