    Fast Facts

    1. Lawsuit Initiation: Google has filed a lawsuit against the operators of BadBox 2.0, a major smart TV botnet believed to be one of the largest globally.

    2. Compromised Devices: The botnet has allegedly compromised over 10 million uncertified devices, including TV streaming boxes, tablets, and projectors, through pre-installed malware or malicious apps.

    3. Illegal Activities: Compromised devices have been used for large-scale ad fraud and other cybercrimes, exploiting hardware running open-source Android software.

    4. Coordinated Action: Alongside the lawsuit, Google is enhancing Google Play Protect to block related malicious apps, while the FBI has initiated efforts to dismantle BadBox 2.0.

Google Sues BadBox 2.0 Botnet Group

Google has begun legal action against the BadBox 2.0 botnet group, believed to be the largest smart TV botnet globally. This China-based operation compromised over 10 million uncertified devices, including streaming boxes, tablets, and projectors.

According to Google, cybercriminals installed malware on these gadgets, often through malicious apps. Consequently, the compromised devices facilitated large-scale ad fraud and other digital crimes. To combat this, Google filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against BadBox’s operators and unspecified damages.

Moreover, Google has enhanced Google Play Protect to block known apps linked to BadBox 2.0 automatically. This proactive measure aims to shield users from further harm. Meanwhile, the FBI is also mobilizing efforts to dismantle the botnet, having issued an alert last month.

This isn’t the first time Google has faced such challenges. In 2021, the tech giant disrupted the Glupteba botnet, which impacted about one million Windows PCs. Such actions highlight the ongoing battle against cybercrime in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Smart cities and urban innovation depend on secure technology. Thus, efforts like Google’s lawsuit not only protect users but also promote a safer environment for tech advancements. By taking a stand against cyber threats, Google reinforces the commitment to a more secure digital future for everyone.
