    Quick Takeaways

    1. Free Webinar Series: Join our two-part webinar to learn about integrating coding and citizen science for engaging student learning experiences.

    2. GLOBE Program Focus: Discover the GLOBE Mission Mosquito initiative, where students gather crucial environmental data related to mosquito-borne diseases.

    3. Hands-on Coding: Participate in a guided coding assignment using the GLOBE Observer app to visualize data and connect it with NASA satellite imagery.

    4. Collaborative Learning: In the second session, troubleshoot coding challenges, share results, and explore ways to adapt the lesson for various educational settings.

Webinar Series Promotes Citizen Science and Coding Skills for Educators

Educators can enhance their teaching methods by joining a free two-part webinar series focused on EMERGE and the GLOBE Mission Mosquito. This initiative aims to integrate coding and citizen science into the classroom.

The GLOBE program promotes Earth systems science through data collection by students and community members. GLOBE Mission Mosquito enables participants to gather environmental data, specifically related to mosquito habitats. Meanwhile, EMERGE, based in Florida, transforms this data into valuable insights regarding mosquito-borne disease risks.

The first session takes place on Sept. 17 at 6 PM ET. Participants will receive an introduction to both EMERGE and GLOBE. They will learn to collect data on mosquito habitats and land cover using the GLOBE Observer app. Additionally, the session includes a guided coding assignment. This task helps students visualize their observations on maps, linking them with NASA satellite data. Even those without prior coding experience will find a welcoming environment.

Following this, the second session occurs on Sept. 24 at 6 PM ET. Participants will reconvene to review the initial coding assignment. This session will offer troubleshooting assistance, encourage sharing of sample outputs, and explore strategies for adapting lessons in various educational settings.

By involving students in citizen science, educators not only foster a love for science but also equip them with essential technology skills. Engaging with real-world data promotes critical thinking and encourages students to make connections between classroom lessons and the environment. Overall, this webinar series represents a significant step forward in promoting scientific literacy and technological advancement in education.
