    3. Hands-On Production Workflow: St. John establishes and oversees the production workflow for the world’s largest heat shield, ensuring meticulous quality and safety throughout the bonding process of 186 tiles.

    4. Career Journey with Artemis: Starting as a technician intern for Artemis I, she has progressed to a manufacturing engineer, reflecting pride in her family’s historical contributions to NASA’s lunar missions.

Engineer Continues Family Legacy in Space Exploration

Diamond St. John, an engineer at Lockheed Martin, plays a crucial role in NASA’s Artemis campaign. Her family has supported human spaceflight at Kennedy Space Center for four generations. Now, she builds on that legacy as she helps prepare for the Artemis III mission.

St. John specializes in the heat shield of the Orion spacecraft. This shield protects astronauts from intense heat during re-entry, reaching nearly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. As one of the most vital components of Orion, it ensures the safety of those on board.

Her work includes overseeing the production workflow for the largest heat shield in the world. Each step in the process requires precision and care. “When we bond the 186 Avcoat tiles, we first sand the blocks to minimize gaps,” St. John explained. “Then we bond, test, and finish by painting and taping the heat shield.”

St. John’s journey in aerospace began with Artemis I. She started as an intern in quality inspection, later earning a degree in engineering. After her internship, she accepted a full-time role before joining Lockheed Martin as a manufacturing engineer. Reflecting on her heritage, she said, “Knowing that my great grandparents worked on the Apollo missions is inspiring.”

This work impacts not only current technology but also future advancements in space exploration. St. John’s dedication to quality and safety reflects the commitment of the entire team. Their efforts pave the way for sustainable human presence on the Moon and beyond, benefiting future generations. The Artemis program represents a significant leap in our quest to explore beyond Earth, making the work of those like St. John vital for the future of human spaceflight.
