The L-band radar sees through clouds and dense forest, while the S-band system is more sensitive, detecting light vegetation and moisture in snow. This dual capability allows scientists to gather intricate data about our planet.

    The deployment process began on August 9. The satellite’s boom unwound gradually, taking about four days to fully extend. Subsequently, on August 15, small explosive bolts freed the reflector assembly. This triggered a process known as “bloom,” allowing the reflector to unfold like an umbrella. The final position requires precise motor activation, ensuring the antenna locks securely in place.

    Phil Barela, the NISAR project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, emphasized the importance of this achievement. “Now that we’ve launched, we are focusing on fine-tuning it to begin delivering transformative science by late fall of this year,” he stated. This initiative reflects years of meticulous planning and engineering.
