    Quick Takeaways

    1. Significant Discovery: A highway project in Norway uncovered a 1,400-year-old pagan temple site with 35 gold foil miniatures, the largest set in the country.

    2. Merovingian Context: These findings, dating to the Merovingian period before the Viking Age, suggest rituals tied to community loyalty and sacrifice practices.

    3. Votive Offerings: Gold foils, known as guldgubbar, likely served as votive offerings, symbolizing deeper social and religious ties rather than mere wealth.

    4. Potential for More Finds: The excavation is limited in scope, indicating that further buried artifacts and insights into this ancient culture remain undiscovered in the surrounding area.

    Remarkable Discovery near Lake Mjøsa

A highway construction project on Norway’s E6 near Vingrom recently unveiled a fascinating pagan shrine, dating back approximately 1,400 years. Archaeologists discovered gold foil miniatures, known as guldgubbar, depicting human figures. These artifacts, each the size of a fingernail, emerged from the soil near Lake Mjøsa. As researchers excavated the site, they recovered a total of 35 gold foils, marking the largest collection found in Norway. The team, led by an archaeologist from the Museum of Cultural History, expressed enthusiasm over the discovery. “It was incredibly exciting,” she remarked after unearthing several shiny pieces from the earth.

The temple itself measures about 49 feet in length, a noteworthy size for a wooden structure of its era. Researchers date it to the Merovingian period, prior to the Viking Age. This era mixed agricultural life with emerging power centers. Leaders used feasts, gifts, and religious observances to foster community loyalty. Places like Hov likely hosted gatherings for sacrifices and seasonal rites, vital to local culture.

    Insights into Ancient Practices

How do archaeologists determine the age of such ancient sites? They analyze the soil layers surrounding an object and may use radiocarbon dating on remains like wood and charcoal. Researchers also study patterns in clothing and jewelry to refine their dating.

The gold foils likely served as votive offerings, gifts meant to appease deities. Archaeologists found them in pits that once held wooden posts, indicating a ritualistic significance. One recently discovered foil appeared purposefully crumpled, highlighting its deliberate placement as an offering.

Researchers emphasize that Norway’s archaeological record remains sparse, partly due to fewer excavations at major Iron Age sites. Gold also tends to be recycled, making original artifacts more challenging to find. Yet, these discoveries shed light on ancient practices and beliefs.

In excavations elsewhere, such as the Sorte Muld site, archaeologists have uncovered vast numbers of these gold figures. These finds suggest that certain locations were popular gathering spots for religious activities over generations. The study of these artifacts not only enriches our understanding of historical rituals but also raises questions about social structures and cultural connections in early Scandinavian societies. Each find serves as a reminder that beneath modern roads and cities lies a rich history waiting to be uncovered.
