    Fast Facts

    1. Funding for Research: J-PAL at MIT has launched Project AI Evidence, granting funds to eight studies aimed at exploring how AI can combat poverty and improve social welfare.

    2. Focus on Impact: The initiative prioritizes evaluating effective AI solutions for pressing social issues, such as education, health, and climate, emphasizing responsible, inclusive technologies.

    3. Collaborative Approach: PAIE connects governments, tech firms, and nonprofits with economists to generate evidence, with financial backing from partners like Google.org and Canada’s International Development Research Centre.

    4. Urgent Policy Questions: Research will assess AI’s utility in education, addressing gender biases, and uncovering job opportunities, marking a strategic effort to leverage AI for social good while mitigating risks.

New Initiative to Leverage AI Against Poverty

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT recently launched Project AI Evidence (PAIE). This initiative aims to explore how artificial intelligence can aid in fighting poverty. Funded studies from PAIE will evaluate various AI applications across key sectors like education, health, and climate.

    Objective of the Initiative

AI has generated both excitement and skepticism. To harness its potential, the project seeks to identify effective and inclusive AI solutions, while also assessing risks. By connecting policymakers, tech companies, and economists, PAIE aims to provide credible evidence on which AI tools work best for different communities.

    Research Focus Areas

The initiative tackles pressing questions that governments and organizations are interested in. For instance, can AI-assisted teaching tools truly enhance student learning? Additionally, it will explore how early-warning systems can help during natural disasters and whether AI chatbots can improve healthcare.

    Funding and Collaboration

PAIE receives financial backing from several notable sources, including Google.org and Canada’s International Development Research Centre. These collaborations help ensure the research will be thorough and impactful. The partnership with Amazon Web Services is particularly aimed at studying AI’s role in workplaces within low-income countries.

    Evaluating Solutions in Education

One of the funded studies examines personalized learning in classrooms. In Kenya, for example, an AI tool developed by EIDU helps teachers assess learning gaps. Similarly, an Indian NGO, Pratham, is creating an AI tool that aligns with its effective Teaching at the Right Level approach. Researchers will analyze the potential effects on both teachers and students.

    Addressing Gender Bias and Employment

Another focus is on reducing gender bias in education. A study will evaluate AI tools designed to help teachers make more equitable decisions. Furthermore, researchers in Kenya will examine an AI tool aimed at uncovering job opportunities, especially for marginalized youth.

    Future Aspirations

As AI technologies evolve, these evaluations represent the beginning of understanding how to best apply AI for social good. J-PAL is committed to ensuring AI serves as a useful complement to human capabilities rather than a replacement.

By continuing to seek new partnerships and funding, J-PAL hopes to expand its work and provide reliable policy guidance. The goal remains clear: to maximize AI’s benefits while minimizing risks, ultimately working toward alleviating poverty and inequality.
