    Top Highlights

    1. Researchers found that ChatGPT and other AIs can be coaxed to reveal personal information, despite guardrails designed to prevent this.
    2. By providing targeted details, students uncovered a professor’s home address, purchase price, and spouse’s name from property records.
    3. OpenAI declined to comment specifically, highlighting the complexity of protecting privacy and the difficulty of removing PII from AI models.
    4. The issue isn’t limited to ChatGPT—other chatbots like xAI’s Grok have also exposed personal data, underscoring the broader challenge of AI privacy risks.

    AI Chatbots and Privacy Concerns

Recently, reports show that AI chatbots sometimes reveal people’s personal phone numbers and addresses. For example, some users found that chatbots can access publicly available property records. At first, many chatbots are designed to block sensitive information. However, with specific prompts, they may still surface private details. This raises concerns about how AI tools handle personal information and protect privacy.

    How It Happens

The issue occurs because chatbots aim to answer questions effectively. Even with safety measures in place, they sometimes dig deeper if prompted. For example, when asked about a professor, a chatbot initially declined to share information. But if asked more specifically, it can narrow down guesses, leading to personal details like home addresses or spouse names. These responses often come from publicly available records, making it easier for chatbots to access such data unintentionally.

    What Can Be Done?

Right now, there are no simple solutions to stop this from happening. Companies can’t always verify which part of their training data contains personal information. They also can’t fully ensure that models will forget or exclude sensitive details. Although AI developers build safety measures, still, the balance between useful responses and privacy protection remains challenging. As AI becomes more common, transparency and careful management will be key to safeguarding people’s personal information.
