    Fast Facts

    1. China has launched the world’s first underwater data center powered by offshore wind off Shanghai, featuring significant energy efficiency with a PUE target of 1.15.
    2. The facility uses seawater for cooling, cutting energy use for cooling to less than 10%, significantly reducing environmental impact compared to traditional data centers.
    3. This project aligns with China’s national strategy to cut fossil fuel dependence, expand renewable energy, and bolster energy security amid AI growth and geopolitical ambitions.
    4. The underwater data center marks a milestone in China’s push for technological independence and leadership in AI infrastructure, differentiating from the U.S. approach.

China’s Innovation in Underwater Data Centers

China has opened the world’s first wind-powered underwater data center. Located off the coast of Shanghai, the facility is a major step forward. It uses seawater for cooling, which reduces energy use. The data center is placed 10 meters below the water’s surface in the Lin-gang Zone. This location allows natural cooling, saving energy and decreasing environmental impact. The project was a collaboration between a private tech firm and a state company, with an investment of about $236 million. Its main goal is to improve energy efficiency while expanding digital infrastructure.

How the Data Center Works and Why It Matters

The underwater data center has a capacity of 24 megawatts. Its design allows it to operate with a very high level of efficiency. It aims for a power-usage effectiveness (PUE) of no more than 1.15. This is considered industry-leading. Using seawater for cooling helps cut energy needs for air conditioning from about 40-50% down to less than 10%. Moreover, more than 95% of the electricity it uses comes from renewable wind power. This setup represents a breakthrough in making data centers greener and more sustainable, especially for supporting AI technologies.

    Impacts and Broader Goals

This project aligns with China’s efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and boost renewable energy. Besides environmental benefits, it enhances China’s tech independence and global leadership in artificial intelligence. China is working hard to develop sustainable energy sources and reform its electricity market. These actions help create a more resilient energy system and support advanced digital infrastructure. Overall, the underwater data center signals a new era of eco-friendly and efficient technology development.
