A musician lost nearly 6 BTC after using a fake Ledger app. The incident highlights the risks of fake apps that look real. The app had the same branding and interface as legitimate ones, making it hard to tell them apart. Even experienced crypto users can fall for these scams.

Crypto commentator Scott Melker explained that the theft happened after musician G. Love, whose real name is Garrett Dutton, downloaded the fake app from the Apple App Store. Dutton had been collecting Bitcoin since 2017 and considered it a safety net. Unfortunately, the app prompted him to enter his 24-word seed phrase. The scammers then used this information to steal his Bitcoin.

On-chain investigator ZachXBT traced the stolen funds. He found that the criminals laundered the Bitcoin through KuCoin and moved it across nine addresses. The exchange flagged and froze some accounts involved, preventing further loss.

Melker said this incident shows the importance of verifying apps through official sources. He emphasized that seed phrases should only be stored offline or entered into hardware wallets. This reduces the risk of hackers stealing assets if an environment is compromised.

He also noted that even hardware wallets, often considered safe, can become vulnerable if users don’t handle them carefully. Melker advised users to slow down and thoroughly verify their actions. Connecting with crypto requires responsibility, as mistakes are often irreversible.

This case reminds everyone that online security requires constant vigilance, especially when handling valuable digital assets.
