MIT Leads New Materials Research Center Funded by NSF
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has chosen MIT to lead a new Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). Associate Professor Rafael Jaramillo from MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering will oversee the center. Professor Caroline Ross will serve as associate director. The center will be part of MIT’s Materials Research Laboratory. Its work will target two main areas. One aim is to improve X-ray detectors used in medical scans, which could lead to better cancer detection and less radiation exposure. The other will explore molten sulfur materials to make metals and semiconductors more efficiently, opening new pathways in materials production. The funding also supports a new testing lab for magnetic and extreme-condition materials, managed by MIT.nano, which will be open to academic and industry users.
Jaramillo emphasizes bringing researchers from different fields together to solve complex problems.
