    MIT Leads New Materials Research Center Funded by NSF

    The National Science Foundation (NSF) has chosen MIT to lead a new Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). The center will focus on developing advanced materials for medical imaging, sustainable metals, and next-generation semiconductors. Over six years, the center is expected to receive $18 million in research funding. It involves 16 research groups from nine departments at four institutions, including MIT, Yale, UC Santa Barbara, and Massachusetts General Hospital with Harvard Medical School. The project is pending a formal agreement with the NSF.

    Associate Professor Rafael Jaramillo from MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering will oversee the center. Professor Caroline Ross will serve as associate director. The center will be part of MIT’s Materials Research Laboratory. Its work will target two main areas. One aim is to improve X-ray detectors used in medical scans, which could lead to better cancer detection and less radiation exposure. The other will explore molten sulfur materials to make metals and semiconductors more efficiently, opening new pathways in materials production. The funding also supports a new testing lab for magnetic and extreme-condition materials, managed by MIT.nano, which will be open to academic and industry users.

    Jaramillo emphasizes bringing researchers from different fields together to solve complex problems. He believes this collaborative approach can lead to innovations in medical diagnostics and metals manufacturing. The center continues MIT’s long tradition of interdisciplinary materials research, dating back to the 1960s. Past investments have helped build research communities like MIT’s Microphotonics Center and Microsystems Technology Laboratories. Alongside MIT faculty, the project involves experts from other universities and hospitals, broadening the impact of its research efforts.
