A study with 120 adults, ranging from 20 to 91 years old, found that how fast we feel time passes relates to memory encoding, not the number of memories. Over the years, our perception of time changes because of changes in brain function. This understanding offers a more hopeful view. It indicates we can influence how we experience time through activities that keep our brains healthy and sharp.

    Memory, Age, and the Perception of Time

    Researchers tested how people recall past events and how they perceive time. Participants named events from the past year and the past decade. Surprisingly, the number of memories made no impact on how fast those periods felt. Instead, older adults remembered fewer events but rated those memories as more vivid and meaningful. Interestingly, the key factor was delayed recall ability—how well a person can remember new information after a few minutes. This aspect partly explains why decades seem compressed to older adults. It points to a decline in encoding new memories, not just a lack of past experiences.

    Practical Insights and Future Outlook

    Understanding this brain-based issue opens new possibilities. Because memory encoding impacts how we perceive time, staying mentally active, social, and physically fit could stretch out meaningful experiences. Activities that boost brain health might slow down the feeling of time rushing by. While these findings are promising, they also remind us to prioritize cognitive health at all ages. Future research could lead to tools and habits that help people feel more present and engaged. In this way, we can contribute positively to our journey through life, making each moment more memorable and more meaningful.
