    NASA Announces First Winner in LunaRecycle Challenge Phase 2

    NASA Awards First Prize in Phase 2 of the Agency’s LunaRecycle Challenge

    NASA has announced the winner of the second phase of its LunaRecycle Challenge. A team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was named the top team for developing innovative solutions to reduce waste during missions to the Moon and deep space. This competition focused on recycling common materials like fabrics, plastics, foam, and metals. The goal is to create ways to reuse materials rather than dispose of them as trash during space missions.

    The MIT team, called Composites for Extraterrestrial Recycling By Engineering the Reuse and Upcycling of Zotek (CERBERUZ), received a total of $775,000 in awards. The team includes students from undergraduate to doctoral levels. Their technology can grind mixed waste into a fine powder. This powder can then be repurposed as reinforcement instead of being treated as contamination. It can be used as input for injection molding or 3D printing filament. MIT won in both the prototype development track and the digital twin track, which involves creating virtual models of recycling systems.

    NASA officials praise the rapid progress shown during the competition. Jennifer Edmunson, program manager for NASA’s Centennial Challenges at the Marshall Space Flight Center, said, “It’s incredible to see these technologies go from concept to prototype and digital twin demonstrations in that time.” She added that these challenges are designed to inspire quick, creative innovations that can help NASA achieve its goals.

    The LunaRecycle competition is a $3 million effort split into two phases. It is done in partnership with The University of Alabama’s College of Engineering. Phase 2 required teams to submit working prototypes, with optional digital twins—virtual models of their systems. Fourteen finalist teams from across the U.S. demonstrated their technologies at The University of Alabama’s campus in Tuscaloosa from August 24 to August 28. Some teams also presented virtual models alongside their prototypes.

    Participants ranged from university students and faculty to entrepreneurs and space technology enthusiasts. They were encouraged to create solutions that could work not only in space but also benefit life on Earth. The competition seeks practical and innovative ideas for recycling waste materials in challenging environments.

    Alongside the first-place team, nine other teams received awards:

    – Second place overall ($225,000): Terasynth from Orlando, Fla., with the Lunar Re-Forge System
    – Most Innovative ($50,000): RECLAIM from Penn State University, with its Resource Extraction and Conversion from Lunar Anthropogenic Inputs with Microwaves system
    – Highest Mass Efficiency ($50,000): Cislune from Rosemead, Calif., with the Carbon Recovery and Feedstock Transformation for Extraterrestrial Reuse system
    – Most Trash Types Recycled ($50,000): Team Lovegrove from Bob Jones University, with LunaBrix

    Additional digital twin winners included:

    – Second place overall ($125,000): Moon Made from Boulder, Colo., with Fiber Forge
    – Most Innovative ($25,000): RECLAIM from Penn State University
    – Best Visualization ($25,000): Waste Parrot Technologies from New York, N.Y.
    – People’s Choice ($25,000): Terasynth with the Lunar Re-Forge System

    Chris Frangione, manager of the LunaRecycle Challenge, emphasized the importance of collaboration. “This finale showcases what can be achieved when the resources of NASA, academic institutions, and talented teams come together,” he said.

    The LunaRecycle Challenge has gained momentum from its earlier phase, which drew over 1,200 registrations—the most in NASA’s 20-year history of the Centennial Challenges. That phase allowed global participants to submit designs for both prototypes and digital twins. Nearly 200 submissions were reviewed by a panel of 50 judges, with 17 teams from five countries and nine states winning.

    NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge is part of a broader effort to develop innovative solutions for space exploration. The program seeks technologies that can turn waste into useful materials during lunar or deep space missions. Past challenges have led to advances in robotics, manufacturing, energy, and biological sciences. NASA continues to work with subject matter experts at its Kennedy, Ames, and Langley centers to refine these emerging technologies and explore new uses for them both in space and on Earth.
