Paper Cups’ Hidden Plastic Layers
Many disposable paper cups look simple, but they often hide a plastic lining. This lining helps prevent leaks and keeps the cup from losing its shape when filled with hot drinks. Usually, people don’t notice it because the cups look just like paper. However, this thin plastic layer touches the hot beverage until the cup is finished. Researchers found that these linings are made with materials like polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA). PE comes from fossil fuels, while PLA is a biodegradable option. Although the cups seem environmentally friendly, the lining’s plastic can release tiny particles into the drink.
Tiny Plastic Particles in Hot Drinks
Laboratory tests revealed that hot water causes these plastic linings to shed millions of tiny particles. The particles are so small that you cannot see them with your eyes. These tiny pieces are called microplastics and nanoplastics,the nanoplastics are about 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. In experiments, PLA-lined cups released about 21 million particles per teaspoon of hot water. PE-lined cups released around 13 million.
