UK’s £400 Billion AI Growth Claim Came Mostly From Google

    Summary Points

    1. The UK’s £400 billion AI boost claim was not its own estimate—it came from a 2023 report commissioned by Google.

    2. The government’s current estimate is much lower: AI could add £55 billion to £140 billion by 2030, with a central estimate of £120 billion.

    3. The figures differ partly because the government assumes slower AI adoption than the older Google-commissioned report did; officials also call their estimate highly uncertain.

    4. The old £400 billion figure remained in government materials for years, even after ministers had a lower estimate—prompting concerns that AI hype could undermine public trust.

The £400 Billion Claim Had a Narrower Source

For nearly two years, UK officials cited a £400 billion boost from AI as evidence of its economic promise. The figure came from a 2023 report commissioned by Google, not from the government’s own forecast.

The government’s newer estimate is far lower: AI adoption and investment in data could add £55 billion to £140 billion to the economy by 2030. Its central estimate stands at £120 billion. Officials also stress that the range remains highly uncertain.

    Adoption Changes the Outlook

The report’s authors say their higher figure assumed faster AI adoption than the government now expects. That distinction matters. AI can help people handle routine work, analyze information and improve some public services. But those gains depend on businesses and agencies adopting useful tools, investing in data and training workers.

A technology’s potential does not guarantee its economic impact. Slow rollout can delay benefits; faster adoption could raise them. Neither outcome is certain.

    Trust Requires Clear Numbers

Government departments continued to use the £400 billion figure even after officials had a lower estimate. The government has not withdrawn the older figure or said it was wrong. Still, presenting the two estimates side by side would help the public understand what each one assumes.

AI may improve services and productivity. Yet hype can weaken confidence, especially when headline figures outpace the government’s own projections. Clear explanations can support realistic expectations—and better decisions about where AI fits.
