Hugging Face CEO Says AI Doom Risk Is Near Zero

    Top Highlights

    1. Closed labs are the main concern: Delangue says serious AI risks may emerge from secretive frontier-AI research.
    2. Agents need accountability: He argues people and companies deploying AI agents should be legally responsible for their cyberattacks.
    3. He’s not convinced AI will doom humanity: Delangue puts that risk “close to zero,” while warning that AI could be concentrated in a few powerful companies.
    4. Open AI is growing fast: Hugging Face now has over 20 million AI builders and says broader access can help democratize AI.

    A Near-Zero Estimate, Not a Guarantee

Hugging Face’s CEO puts his P(doom)—his estimate of the chance AI could destroy humanity—“close to zero.” He says other dangers deserve attention, too. Still, he warns that future risks, including biological uses of AI, may emerge from closed labs. So far, he says, agent misbehavior has mostly surfaced as large companies test advanced systems in secret. His optimism is a personal view, not a settled forecast.

    Agents Need Clear Responsibility

As AI agents take on more tasks, their actions can have real consequences. The CEO argues that companies deploying agents should answer for what those systems do. He also says cyberattacks should remain illegal, whether a person or an agent carries them out. Clear responsibility could help build trust as organizations adopt these tools.

Open Models Broaden Access, With Trade-Offs

Hugging Face lets people share, download and customize AI models. The company now counts more than 20 million AI builders and has sold 50,000 programmable Microducks. That growth suggests strong interest, though it does not prove every model works well or safely. Open access may spread AI power beyond a handful of firms. But it also asks users to manage more of the risks themselves. Nvidia’s announced $12.93 billion deal to acquire Hugging Face could bring added resources, while raising questions about how much control a few large companies should hold.
