    Fast Facts

    1. Green values don’t always drive green purchases: Price and practicality can keep people from paying more for sustainable products.
    2. Enjoyment helps close the gap: Products that feel fun, appealing, or satisfying make eco-conscious shoppers more willing to pay a premium.
    3. Product type matters: The enjoyment boost was strongest for a bioplastic bottle, weaker for a wood-based T-shirt, and absent for biofuel—where practical concerns weighed most.
    4. Marketing needs substance: Make sustainable products genuinely enjoyable, and back environmental claims with proof to avoid greenwashing concerns.

Enjoyment can close the values-to-action gap

Many people care about the environment but still choose the cheaper, more practical option. A study of Finnish and Dutch consumers points to one reason: enjoyment can help turn green values into spending.

Across three studies, people with strong sustainable-consumption values showed greater willingness to pay extra when they expected a product to feel pleasant, exciting or satisfying. Practical concerns, such as price and efficiency, often weakened that link. The effect was real, though modest: adding these attitudes raised the researchers’ model’s explanatory power from 47% to nearly 48%.

    Products face different tests

The researchers compared a bioplastic bottle, a wood-based-fiber T-shirt and wood-based biofuel. The bottle benefited most from an enjoyable feel. For the T-shirt, practical concerns reduced willingness to pay, while enjoyment made little difference. Biofuel faced the toughest test: price and efficiency concerns strongly weakened consumers’ willingness to pay more.

A two-year follow-up also found that enjoyment strengthened the connection between people’s values and later buying behavior. Still, a pleasant impression cannot replace a product that works well and earns its price.

Appeal matters, but trust matters more

Companies can make sustainable products easier to adopt by pairing credible environmental benefits with a satisfying everyday experience. That could mean a bottle people like to use or clothing that feels good and lasts.

Yet marketers must not use feel-good claims to distract from weak performance or doubtful environmental benefits. Consumers deserve clear evidence, especially when a product asks them to pay more. Better design and honest claims can help sustainable choices move from niche purchases into ordinary routines—a practical step in humanity’s longer effort to live within environmental limits.
