    Fast Facts

    1. AI coding agents multiply output—but make code understanding the new bottleneck.
    2. Understanding matters for real-world apps: security, reliability, and scaling take more than “vibe coding.”
    3. Before building, write a feature memo with an agent to clarify options, trade-offs, and decisions.
    4. Learn continuously: use agents to review PRs and create focused visual HTML guides for features.

Three Techniques to Understand Your Codebase When Coding Agents Write the Code

Coding agents can turn ideas into features faster than ever. But as they write more code, developers face a new bottleneck: understanding what the software does and why it works. That knowledge matters when a product grows, handles user data or must meet reliability goals. Three practical techniques can help.

Plan Features Before Agents Build Them

Before asking an agent to implement a feature, use it to explore the options. Ask it to examine relevant parts of the codebase, outline possible approaches and explain the trade-offs. Then write a short feature memo that records the plan and key decisions.

This step helps you spot mismatches before they become code. It also gives the agent clearer direction. Still, treat its research as a starting point. Check important claims against the code and your product’s needs.

Use Pull Request Reviews to Learn

A pull request review can reveal how a feature fits into the larger application. Ask an agent to explain the change, trace how affected parts interact and identify risks. Then use that explanation to ask sharper questions and give useful feedback.

Agents can speed up routine reviews. However, they should not replace careful human attention on high-risk changes, such as security or data-handling work. For lower-risk changes, an agent-assisted review can help a reviewer understand the feature without reading every line first.

Create Focused Memos for Existing Features

A guide to an entire codebase can overwhelm both the agent and the reader. Instead, ask for a visual HTML memo about one specific page, service or feature. Include how it works, what it connects to and which design choices matter.

Read a memo when you have a few spare minutes, then ask follow-up questions. Over time, these small sessions build a broader picture of the application. Keep the guides focused and revisit them after major changes. Agents can summarize code, but developers still need to verify that those summaries match the software.
