    Summary Points

    1. Neurons can multitask: AI models may pack seemingly unrelated concepts into the same neurons—a phenomenon called superposition.
    2. The inner workings look tangled: That complexity has made researchers doubt they can fully understand large language models.
    3. Cammarata kept looking: After spending months examining neurons with new tools and AI agents, he began finding patterns and mapping whole circuits.
    4. A fresh perspective matters: Revisiting an old “car-and-cat” neuron, he asked what the concepts might share instead of assuming they were unrelated.

    A tangled picture, reconsidered

For years, researchers saw neural networks as tangled systems. Early studies suggested that one neuron could respond to unrelated ideas, such as cars and cats. This pattern became known as superposition. It seemed to show that models packed concepts together to handle more information.

So researchers tried to untangle the networks. Progress came slowly. Today’s large language models contain so many parts that researchers can inspect only small sections at a time.

    Look for the logic

A new approach challenges the assumption that most neurons remain unreadable. After spending months studying them with new tools and AI agents, one researcher says he began to spot patterns and trace broader circuits.

He also revisited the car-and-cat example. Instead of treating the responses as proof that unrelated ideas had merged, he looked for a shared feature that might explain them. That shift matters: A neuron’s apparent mix of concepts may reflect a pattern researchers have not yet recognized.

    Promise, with limits

If researchers can map more of a model’s internal logic, they may better understand how it works and where it can fail. That could support safer development and more informed adoption.

Still, one researcher’s new reading does not settle the debate. Some experts doubt that anyone can fully explain today’s largest models. New tools may help, but researchers must test their interpretations across models and examples. The hopeful message is not that the knot has disappeared. It is that closer inspection may reveal more order than expected.
