Some researchers argue that treating these outputs as evidence of real reasoning is misleading. Instead, they suggest focusing on what AI can reliably do, like solving problems and verifying solutions. Embracing AI’s strengths without over-attributing human-like thinking could accelerate scientific progress. Others warn that overestimating AI reasoning may hinder efforts to improve models or discover better methods. Their true nature is uncertain. As one expert said, calling it “reasoning” might be wishful thinking—like talking about engines powered by tiny hooves. Until we fully understand what’s happening inside these systems, trusting their results selectively remains essential.
