    Fast Facts

    1. Feature Relaunch: Apple will reintroduce blood oxygen monitoring on Apple Watch models (Series 9, Series 10, Ultra 2) through a software update after a year-long import ban.

    2. Software Requirements: Users must update to iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1 to access the reworked blood oxygen feature and view data in the Health app.

    3. Legal Context: The relaunch follows a lengthy legal battle with Masimo, which accused Apple of patent infringement related to blood-oxygen monitoring technology.

    4. Market Impact: There’s no effect on previously purchased Apple Watch units with the original feature or on those sold outside the US, despite the legal disputes.

Apple’s Redesigned Blood Oxygen Monitoring Feature Launches Today

Apple has officially announced the return of its blood oxygen monitoring feature on Apple Watches in the U.S. This rollout comes after more than a year of legal challenges that removed the feature from some models. The redesigned tool will be available for Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 users.

Starting today, customers can access the new feature after updating their devices to iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. Once updated, any blood oxygen data captured will sync with the iPhone, allowing users to view their readings in the Health app’s respiratory section. This integration enhances user experience by making vital health data readily accessible.

Importantly, this update does not affect Apple Watch units previously sold with the original blood oxygen feature. Additionally, models purchased outside of the U.S. remain unaffected. Apple reassures users that they can benefit from the newly designed monitoring tool without concerns over older devices.

The feature’s return coincides with a significant legal saga. A lawsuit from medical device maker Masimo led to the initial removal of the monitoring capability. The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that Apple violated Masimo’s patents. However, due to a recent ruling by U.S. Customs, the company can now offer the feature again with modifications.

This updates reinforces Apple’s commitment to health innovation, allowing users to monitor their oxygen levels conveniently. As technology continues to evolve, these developments highlight the potential for smart cities and urban spaces to enhance public health initiatives. The integration of health monitoring in everyday devices like smartwatches illustrates a future where personal well-being combines seamlessly with urban living.
