    Top Highlights

    1. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled against reinstating an import ban on Apple Watches, allowing continued sales of devices with redesigned blood-oxygen monitors.
    2. The ITC concluded that Apple’s new smartwatches do not infringe on Masimo’s patents, ending the case and referencing a prior ruling from March.
    3. This decision marks a significant resolution in the longstanding legal feud, which began in 2021, regarding patent disputes and previous bans on certain Apple Watch models.
    4. Despite this victory, Masimo can still appeal the ruling, and Apple faces ongoing legal challenges, including a recent $634 million patent infringement judgment.

Apple avoids a second import ban for its redesigned smartwatches, according to a recent court ruling. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) decided not to reinstate the ban, allowing Apple to sell its updated devices. This decision follows a victory for Apple after a long legal battle with medical tech company Masimo.

The case dates back to 2021 when Masimo claimed that Apple infringed on its patents. Initially, the ITC ruled against Apple, leading to an import ban. In response, Apple redesigned the blood-oxygen monitoring feature in some models. However, Masimo challenged the changes and sought a new ban.

Recently, the ITC concluded that Apple’s redesigned smartwatches do not violate Masimo’s patents. As a result, the import ban was canceled, giving Apple a major win. Apple praised the ITC decision, emphasizing that most of Masimo’s claims were dismissed. Meanwhile, Masimo has the option to appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

This legal victory is important beyond the courtroom; it highlights how innovation benefits everyone. When tech companies develop new features—like blood-oxygen monitoring—they can improve health and safety in smart cities. Smart devices and urban tech work together to make daily life easier and safer. For example, wearable health tech can help people monitor their well-being in real time, making cities more connected and health-conscious.

Apple’s ability to continue selling its smartwatches with updated features shows the value of innovation and legal support in the tech world. As cities become smarter and more connected, these advancements will shape a healthier, more efficient future for everyone.
