    Top Highlights

    1. Claude stays ad-free: Anthropic reaffirmed its pledge, backed by roughly $112 billion in investor funding.
    2. Ads are spreading: OpenAI and Google are expanding chatbot ads as AI response costs mount.
    3. AI-made copy may work better: Koah says partly AI-generated ads get twice the clicks, though regulated brands often prefer tighter human control.
    4. Chatbots enable smarter targeting: Longer prompts and conversation context can match ads to users’ needs more precisely than traditional search.

Ads in Chatbots Have Arrived. Here’s What’s Working—and What’s Not

    Ads help cover the cost

AI responses cost money to produce. So, for many chatbot companies, ads may help keep services running. One leading AI company has attracted more than 100,000 advertisers since launching chatbot ads in February. A major search provider has also expanded ads in its AI chatbot to 10 more countries, saying users find them relevant.

Not every company wants ads. One AI developer has reaffirmed its ad-free pledge and has ample investor funding. Still, smaller chatbot platforms may have fewer ways to pay their bills.

    Good creative needs guardrails

An ad technology startup says ads made partly with AI earn twice as many clicks as ads written entirely by people. One reason may be fit: AI-crafted copy can feel more at home beside an AI-generated answer.

However, advertisers need control. The startup says it uses product details and images from brands, which can help prevent false claims. Yet companies in regulated fields may need tighter human review. That caution can make ads less engaging. If ads feel dull or intrusive, users may leave.

    Context can improve relevance

Chatbots can draw on more than a short search query. They can use a user’s prompt and the surrounding conversation to choose an ad. For example, a spa ad might suit a discussion about stress, even when a search engine would show therapy services.

That extra context may make ads more useful. But advertisers still want a better experience, and chatbot platforms must earn users’ trust. The strongest approach will pair relevant ads with clear limits and careful oversight.
