    Enhancing Data Center Performance with Less Hardware

    Data centers often pool multiple storage devices so many applications can share them. However, even with pooling, some devices remain underused due to performance differences. To solve this, MIT researchers developed a new system called Sandook, which improves storage device performance without needing extra hardware.

    How Sandook Works

    Sandook uses a two-tier structure. A central controller manages task distribution across all devices. Meanwhile, local controllers on each storage device quickly respond to issues, rerouting data if a device slows down. This setup allows the system to adapt in real-time to changing workloads.

    The system tackles three main sources of variability. First, differences in SSD age, wear, and capacity cause performance gaps. Second, conflicts between read and write operations can slow data processing. Third, garbage collection, which removes outdated data, temporarily reduces device speed.

    Smart Management Boosts Efficiency

    Sandook profiles each SSD’s typical performance to detect slowdowns caused by garbage collection. When identified, it reduces work on affected devices and shifts tasks to others. This way, no single SSD becomes a bottleneck, and performance stays high.

    The global controller assigns workloads based on each device’s capacity, while local controllers handle immediate adjustments. As a result, Sandook minimizes delays and balances workloads efficiently. This approach allows SSDs to reach up to 95 percent of their maximum potential without changing hardware.

    Real-World Results and Future Plans

    Testing shows Sandook improves application performance by 12 to 94 percent over traditional methods. It also increases SSD utilization by 23 percent, making better use of costly hardware. This means data centers can run faster and more efficiently, saving energy and resources.

    Looking ahead, researchers plan to add new features that give even more control to SSDs. They also want to use AI to predict workload patterns, further boosting efficiency. This innovation brings flash storage closer to its full potential in modern data centers.
