Dune: Part Three’s Double Sandworm Proves Popcorn Bucket Innovation Is Dead

    Fast Facts

    1. AMC is doubling down on Dune: Part Two’s viral Sandworm bucket with two new designs for Dune: Part Three.
    2. The “Double Sandworm” adds a second hand hole, making shared snacking easier—but also amplifying the original bucket’s suggestive design.
    3. The article argues that most movie tie-in buckets lack the playful imagination of standouts like The Devil Wears Prada 2’s handbag and The Odyssey’s Trojan Horse.
    4. The original Sandworm bucket worked because its oddness felt accidental; its imitators, the article says, are less surprising and less fun.

Popcorn Bucket Innovation Is at an All-Time Low, and Dune: Part Three’s Double Sandworm Is Proof

A Bigger Opening, but Not a Bigger Idea

Movie theaters need more than ticket sales to bring audiences back. Collectible popcorn buckets offer one way to add value to a night out—and to give fans a souvenir that lasts beyond the credits. But a collectible should feel worth collecting. The latest Dune buckets raise a familiar question: Where did the imagination go?

AMC Theatres plans to sell two buckets for Dune: Part Three: the Sandworm Thumper and the Double Sandworm. Each has a worm-shaped hand opening. The Double Sandworm has two. The film arrives Dec. 17.

That second opening fixes a practical problem with the bucket from Dune: Part Two. Now, two people can reach for popcorn at once. It also leans into the sexual innuendo that many viewers saw in the first design. The result makes the old joke bigger, but not necessarily better.

Novelty Needs More Than a Viral Shape

The original Sandworm bucket went viral because it looked strange and invited people to interpret it for themselves. That accidental quality gave the design an edge. The Double Sandworm, by contrast, feels like a follow-up built around the response rather than a fresh idea.

Still, AMC has shown that a movie-themed bucket can deliver a good joke. A handbag-shaped container suits The Devil Wears Prada 2. A Trojan Horse bucket fits The Odyssey. The wearable “Guile Hair” bucket for Street Fighter also has a playful charm. Each design connects its shape to the film in a memorable way.

That kind of thinking matters. A bucket can serve popcorn and act as a small piece of movie memorabilia. It can make the theater experience feel different from watching at home. Yet novelty alone has limits. Reaching over your head for popcorn might amuse you once. It may not make a great keepsake.

Fans Deserve Better Value and Better Design

The Double Sandworm still has a clear appeal for devoted fans. It nods to a striking creature from a major science-fiction series, and its two openings offer a small functional upgrade. For someone who enjoys collecting movie merchandise, that combination may be enough.

But theaters should ask more of these products. A strong design could reflect a film’s setting, characters or visual style while still working as a usable container. It could also offer a thoughtful detail that rewards a closer look. The goal should not be complexity for its own sake. It should be a design that feels both fun and considered.

Price matters, too. A $35 bucket with a lumpy hand and “Clayface” printed on the side shows how quickly a novelty item can test a fan’s patience. Buyers can decide whether a collectible deserves the cost. However, theaters should give them more than a familiar shape and a recognizable logo.

AMC’s latest Dune buckets may draw attention, just as the earlier design did. But attention does not always signal invention. Fans deserve collectibles that capture a movie’s imagination—not just its latest joke.
