    Quick Takeaways

    1. Battery Upgrade: The Pixel 9a features a significant upgrade with a 5,100mAh battery and faster 23W charging, matching the flagship Pixel 9 model, addressing previous complaints about battery life.

    2. Charging Performance: Utilizing a compatible USB Power Delivery PPS charger, the Pixel 9a charges to 50% in 30 minutes and 100% in 94 minutes, showing modest improvement but still slower than competitors.

    3. Heat Management: The phone reaches 40.4°C during peak charging, which leads to throttling down to 18W to mitigate heat, resulting in concerns about long-term battery health and usage.

    4. Market Position: While the Pixel 9a’s charging capabilities are competitive, they are not substantially faster than its predecessor, necessitating caution for users prioritizing thermal performance and longevity.

Google Pixel 9a: Fast Charging Upgrade Is One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

The new Google Pixel 9a comes with significant improvements in battery performance. Notably, it features a larger 5,100mAh battery and upgraded 23W charging. This upgrade finally aligns the charging capabilities with the flagship Pixel 9 model. However, these enhancements come with certain drawbacks.

While the Pixel 9a charges more quickly than its predecessor, it still struggles with speed. It reaches 50% in 30 minutes and 75% in 50 minutes. However, it takes a lengthy 94 minutes to reach a full charge. Compared to last year’s Pixel 8a, the new model shows minimal time savings.

Moreover, the charging process brings another concern: heat. During charging, the device can reach temperatures as high as 40.4°C. Although this heat is only temporary, it leads the phone to throttle back to 18W to prevent overheating. This increase in heat raises questions about long-term battery health.

Despite these concerns, the Pixel 9a manages to maintain respectable battery life. The larger capacity enhances daily usage, allowing users to stay connected longer. This advantage is essential for the evolving smart city landscape, where reliable technology is key.

Additionally, to take full advantage of the Pixel 9a’s increased power, users must invest in a new USB Power Delivery PPS charger. Using the previous model’s charger limits performance to 18W. While this requirement may not please all users, it reflects a growing trend toward faster charging technologies in the smartphone market.

Overall, Google made strides with the Pixel 9a. However, challenges remain. The need for a new charger and potential overheating issues might temper enthusiasm. As the market for mid-range smartphones intensifies, users will weigh these factors carefully before deciding if the upgrade meets their needs.
