Yet, as Meyer’s paper illustrates, introducing a subscription model for such technology could create barriers for those unable to pay.

    Meyer’s fictional narrative, titled “(Pre/Sub)scribe,” follows a user named Briar enjoying the benefits of B-Bots. However, the story also raises critical questions about equity in the for-profit health care system. Meyer believes that even valuable medical advancements can become detrimental if only accessible to those with financial means.

    Having experienced both U.S. and Canadian health care systems, Meyer’s insights are poignant. She reflects on her mother’s cancer treatment in British Columbia, contrasting it with the expensive landscape in the U.S. Her story not only warns about the risks of widening inequality but also emphasizes the complex relationship between gut health and the microbiome.

    MIT’s Commitment to Ethical Computing
