    Fast Facts

ASML expects China to generate roughly 20% of its sales this year.

China shipments more than doubled quarter-on-quarter, reaching 23% of machine sales.

Third-quarter sales to China surged 109% compared with the previous quarter.

US pressure is mounting on Dutch leaders to restrict machinery exports.

A sharp rise in China sales

ASML’s chipmaking equipment sales to China jumped 109 per cent in the third quarter compared with the previous three months. China accounted for 23 per cent of the company’s machine sales, up from 14 per cent in the second quarter.

The Dutch company expects China to make up about 20 per cent of its total sales this year. That forecast suggests the latest quarterly surge may not continue at the same pace. Still, it shows how strongly Chinese chipmakers have bought equipment despite growing pressure from the United States to limit such sales.

ASML makes machines that help chipmakers produce semiconductors. These components power products from smartphones and cars to medical devices and data centres. Access to equipment can help chipmakers expand production and improve their technology. However, ASML’s sales figures alone do not show how many advanced chips China can produce.

Export rules shape a high-stakes market

The sales increase comes as Washington urges the Dutch government to tighten restrictions on chipmaking equipment exports to China. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten faces pressure to respond. Any new limits could affect ASML’s business, while also shaping China’s efforts to strengthen its domestic chip industry.

The debate involves both practical needs and security concerns. Wider access to chipmaking tools could support more production for everyday technology. At the same time, governments worry that advanced chips may also serve military or strategic purposes. Export rules seek to manage those risks, but they can also disrupt trade and supply plans.

For the public, the issue may seem distant from daily life. Yet chips sit inside many of the tools people use to communicate, work, travel and receive care. The choices governments and companies make today will help determine who builds those technologies, how reliably they reach the market and how their benefits spread.
