    Top Highlights

    1. Digital Detox Challenge: I experienced a day without the internet, eliminating distractions and interruptions, which led to a renewed sense of calm and focus.

    2. Navigating the Old-Fashioned Way: Without GPS, we resorted to a physical map for estate sale adventures, embracing the challenge and humor in navigating without tech support.

    3. Embracing Simplicity: The day was filled with meaningful activities like reading, engaging with nature, and tackling a puzzle, showcasing how life can be fulfilling without constant digital engagement.

    4. Lessons Learned: I realized the value of cutting down notifications and unnecessary tech reliance, fostering a desire for more quiet moments in life away from digital temptations.

    A Day Without Digital Distractions

What would happen if you went a day without the internet? Last weekend, I took on this challenge. Surrounded by the serene beauty of the Sandia Mountains in New Mexico, I decided to unplug. Initially, I felt excited at the thought of a digital detox. No notifications? No emails? It sounded liberating. However, the reality set in. I realized I would miss important updates, from my foster cat’s antics to traffic alerts. With a mixture of excitement and nervousness, I prepped for a full day without the digital noise.

For this detox, I laid down some ground rules. I unhooked my internet gateway, turning off all smart devices. I didn’t allow any apps except for voice calls. My morning started with a mystery novel and coffee instead of social media scrolling. It felt refreshing to engage in a slower, more deliberate morning.

    Navigating a World Without Wi-Fi

To embrace this tech-free experience, my husband and I embarked on a quest to explore estate sales. We used a 2002 road atlas, which felt like time travel. Each street index entry took effort. Soon, we faced our first hurdle—a traffic jam with no GPS guidance. Instead of panicking, we found an old route, an adventure in its own right.

Without streaming services, we turned to an antenna for entertainment. Flip through the channels revealed classic movies instead of binge-worthy series. We also pieced together a jigsaw puzzle, enjoying each other’s company without the screen.

Reflecting on this day, the biggest takeaway was the peace found in fewer interruptions. I realized how often I reached for my device for trivial queries. I could find joy in silence, sharing moments with my husband instead. This experience has reshaped how I view my relationship with technology. I plan to limit notifications moving forward, embracing quiet moments in life.
