Suspect Arrested After Molotov Cocktail Incident at OpenAI CEO’s Home

Early on Friday morning, San Francisco police arrested a man believed to be involved in an attack near the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The suspect is accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence, but fortunately, no one was hurt. The device landed close to the house and was quickly put out, causing only minor damage.

Shortly after the incident, authorities located a person matching the suspect’s description outside OpenAI’s headquarters in Mission Bay. That individual made threatening remarks about the building, prompting a swift police response. Officers detained the 20-year-old male suspect at the scene and took him into custody. Charges are still pending as investigations continue.

OpenAI’s security team sent a message to employees, reassuring them that the company is working closely with law enforcement. They also mentioned that public safety measures are in place, including heightened police and security presence around the office. Despite the security concerns, OpenAI’s offices remain open, and staff are advised to stay cautious, especially about access points.

The police responded to a fire call in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood around 4:12 a.m. The investigation revealed that the same suspect threw the incendiary device that started a fire at a residential gate before fleeing on foot. The suspect was later found outside OpenAI’s building, still making threats. The police arrested him on the scene and confirmed that no injuries or major damage resulted.

OpenAI expressed gratitude for the quick response of the police. A company spokesperson said that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement and appreciate the city’s support in keeping everyone safe. This recent incident marks one of several threats faced by OpenAI and its staff, including a previous lockdown last November and protests earlier this year.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about safety but also the importance of prompt law enforcement action, which prevented further harm.
