    Quick Takeaways

    1. AirTags are water-resistant with an IP67 rating, not fully waterproof.
    2. They withstand splashes, rain, and shallow puddles but not deep or prolonged immersion.
    3. Water resistance can weaken over time and isn’t guaranteed in all conditions.
    4. Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover water damage; consider waterproof cases for extra protection.

    How Waterproof Are AirTags?

Will yours survive ocean waves or a washing machine?

Gadgets that resist water have become essential in recent years. Apple’s AirTags are no exception. These small trackers attach to nearly anything, making their water resistance important. Apple states that AirTags are protected against water intrusion, but this does not mean they are fully waterproof. Understanding their limits helps prevent damage and extends their lifespan.

What You Need to Know About Water Resistance

AirTags aren’t designed to be waterproof. No device can withstand all water exposure. Instead, they are labeled as water-resistant. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) tests devices for resistance using the IP (Ingress Protection) scale. This scale features two digits: the first shows protection against solids like dust, and the second against liquids like water.

AirTags have an IP67 rating. The “6” means they are dust-tight. The “7” indicates they can handle immersion in 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. This level covers rain and brief puddle drops, but it isn’t meant for diving or prolonged submersion. An IPX8 rating would allow longer or deeper immersion, but Apple doesn’t assign this to AirTags.

Real-world use differs from lab tests. An AirTag can likely survive rain or splashes, but not constant exposure to water, high pressure, or heat. Keep in mind that products aged over time may lose some of their water resistance. For the best protection, avoid exposing your AirTag to ocean waves, washing machines, sauna steam, or other extreme conditions.

Liability is also a concern. Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover water damages for AirTags. Replacing one costs about $30 each or $100 for a four-pack. Users can add extra protection with waterproof cases rating up to IPX8, offering more durable layers against water but still not meant for underwater adventures. Just remember, these accessories can help, but they do not turn AirTags into fully waterproof devices. Treat them as backup for minor accidents, not as equipment to be used for swimming or diving.
