    Quick Takeaways

    1. Jinhua Zhao, a renowned transportation scholar and MIT alumnus, has been appointed head of MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning, effective July 1.
    2. Zhao is a global authority on mobility, with hands-on experience shaping policy for major transit systems like London, Hong Kong, and Japan Railways, as well as U.S. agencies.
    3. He founded the MIT Mobility Initiative and hosts a weekly global Mobility Forum to connect researchers, policymakers, and practitioners worldwide.
    4. Zhao aims to bridge the gap between research and real-world decision-making, ensuring city leaders can access vital insights to address urban challenges like aging infrastructure and AI integration.

New Leadership at MIT’s Urban Studies and Planning Department

Jinhua Zhao has been named head of MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), starting July 1. Zhao, a renowned expert in transportation and mobility, holds the title of Class of 1941 Professor of Cities and Transportation. His appointment aims to strengthen the department’s focus on real-world impact and innovative research. Zhao replaces Professor Christopher Zegras, who led DUSP since 2020 and expanded its engagement with communities and policymakers worldwide.

    Advancing Mobility and Urban Research

Zhao’s career at MIT began after earning advanced degrees from the Institute. He describes MIT as a hub for sharing ideas across disciplines, which has influenced his work. His research has shaped transportation policies globally, from London to Hong Kong, and across the United States. Through projects like autonomous vehicle strategies in Singapore and the Middle East, Zhao aims to close the gap between technology and regulation. His efforts demonstrate how research can solve complex urban mobility challenges worldwide.

Driving Knowledge into Practice and Policy

One of Zhao’s key initiatives is the MIT Mobility Initiative. It connects researchers and global leaders to discuss transportation issues through a weekly forum, now attended by over 200 practitioners. He also directs the JTL Urban Mobility Lab to combine behavioral science and technology, improving transit systems. Zhao emphasizes fast-changing technology requires swift action from city officials and governments. As department head, he plans to focus on ensuring research reaches decision-makers, helping cities adapt to aging populations, AI developments, and other pressing issues.
