    Fast Facts

    1. Maka Kids reimagines children’s media by emphasizing well-being over screen time.
    2. The startup raised $3 million to develop a streaming app for ages zero to six.
    3. Content is curated for healthy development, avoiding ads and algorithms.
    4. Founders aim to create a trusted media experience for children and families.

The Current Landscape of Children’s Media

Today’s media environment bombards children with endless streaming options. Popular shows like “Baby Shark” and “Skibidi Toilet” dominate kids’ screens, prioritizing viewership over developmental needs. Parents find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices, many of which come laden with ads and algorithms that thrive on engagement metrics. This creates an unsettling dynamic. Parents want the best for their kids, but often question the quality and impact of content available.

Amid this chaos, Maka Kids emerges as a refreshing change. This startup aims to transform children’s media by shifting the focus from watch time to well-being. It offers a streaming app tailored for children ages zero to six, featuring content designed specifically for healthy development. Unlike traditional platforms, Maka Kids dispenses with recommendation algorithms and auto-play features. Instead, it provides a predictable experience that promotes learning, creativity, and emotional growth.

    Redefining Screen Time with Intent

Founders Isabel Sheinman and Tanyella Leta designed Maka Kids to alleviate parents’ concerns about screen time. They base their platform on extensive research, including hundreds of user interviews. Parents expressed valid worries about how excessive or poorly chosen screen time affects their children’s behavior and emotional health. Maka Kids offers a solution rooted in developmental science.

Their patent-pending Maka Imprint framework, developed in cooperation with the Yale Child Study Center, assesses content quality against multiple developmental indicators. It evaluates pacing, color contrast, and narrative structure, ensuring that each show provides age-appropriate stimulation. By focusing on storytelling, Maka Kids harnesses narratives to support language development and emotional regulation, enhancing rather than detracting from children’s growth.

The app allows parents to customize their children’s viewing experience. Parents select channels aligned with themes like kindness or emotional regulation and set viewing limits. As each session concludes, characters provide gentle wind-down cues, supporting a smooth transition away from screens. The founders aspire to create a platform that serves as a “trust layer” for digital experiences, advocating for responsible and beneficial media consumption among young audiences.

As Maka Kids approaches its public launch this fall, it aims not only to entertain but to educate and nurture. This initiative challenges existing norms in children’s media, focusing on what truly benefits kids rather than what merely captivates them. As the future unfolds, platforms like Maka Kids could redefine how families approach screen time by embedding well-being at its core.
