This collision made the largest modern-day crater in our solar system. The new crater, named after scientist Tom McGetchin, measures 728 feet wide and 141 feet deep. Although we missed seeing the impact live, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) helped scientists identify the change. By comparing images from October 2025, they confirmed the crater’s formation. This event highlights how active our lunar neighbor is, even with impacts so rare that they happen once every 132 years on average. These findings give us better insight into the moon’s dynamic surface and the ongoing history of space debris collisions.

    Detecting the Difference: Changes and Technologies

    The LRO’s advanced cameras played a vital role in capturing this event. After the impact, the orbiter flew over the site again in December 2025. The narrow-angle camera revealed the new crater with surprising clarity. Scientists observed a temperature difference in the surrounding area as well. There, a four-mile-wide zone was about 16 degrees Fahrenheit cooler at night. This cooling occurs because the impact disturbed the moon’s surface layer, known as regolith. When less dense, this surface layer cannot hold heat as well. These technological tools have greatly enhanced our ability to monitor lunar changes. They not only help us study impacts but also provide vital information about surface conditions that could affect future lunar exploration.

    What This Means for the Future of Lunar Exploration

    This rare impact opens the door for many new studies. Researchers will analyze the crater and nearby areas to understand more about lunar geology. The cooler spot around the crater could influence how future rovers move and operate near new impacts. Understanding surface changes can also improve landing safety and mobility for lunar missions.
