    Fast Facts

    1. Temperature Regulation Technology: Ekoï utilizes NASA-developed phase-change materials to create cycling gear that regulates temperature, ensuring cyclists remain comfortable in varying weather conditions.

    2. Historical Roots: The technology originated from a 1980s NASA initiative aimed at enhancing spacesuit gloves, evolving into the widely adopted Outlast fabric for diverse applications including activewear.

    3. Performance Impact: Launched during the 2022 Tour de France, Ekoï’s Outlast gear improved cyclists’ performance by maintaining aerodynamics and comfort during drastic temperature changes in mountain stages.

    4. Recognition and Trust: The association with NASA elevates the credibility of Ekoï’s products, making their innovative cycling apparel internationally recognized for quality and performance.

NASA-Derived Textiles are Touring France by Bike

During the Tour de France, athletes pedal through diverse climates. They face cold rains and scorching heat. To manage these extremes, cyclists depend on high-tech gear that adapts to changing conditions. One innovative solution comes from a material with roots in NASA research.

Phase-change materials play a pivotal role. These substances maintain a consistent temperature by absorbing and releasing heat. In the 1980s, NASA funded research to integrate these materials into textiles for spacesuit gloves. Though those gloves never flew on missions, they led to a breakthrough: a fabric called Outlast.

Outlast utilizes tiny capsules filled with phase-change materials woven into the fabric. This design helps regulate body temperature, providing comfort during intense activity. Today, Outlast is a well-known fabric found in everything from bedding to activewear.

Founded in 2001, Ekoï specializes in cycling gear. Based in Fréjus, France, the company discovered Outlast at a fabric trade fair in Munich. The technology’s connection to NASA impressed the team. “When you say NASA, it’s always impressive,” said a company representative.

Ekoï launched its Outlast line during the 2022 Tour de France. Cyclists experienced a noticeable boost in performance, particularly in mountainous regions. As temperatures fluctuated, the fabric helped maintain comfort and aerodynamics. Instead of opening their jerseys to let in cool air, cyclists could keep them zipped up.

Currently, Ekoï offers a diverse range of products, including jerseys, gloves, and socks featuring Outlast technology. Athletes and casual bikers alike appreciate the comfort and performance enhancements these NASA-inspired textiles provide.

NASA’s innovations continue to impact various fields, from space exploration to competitive sports. With each cycling event, the blend of science and sport showcases the practical applications of cutting-edge technology, enhancing both performance and comfort.
