Permafrost contributes the largest share because it holds vast amounts of frozen carbon. This additional warming can reduce the remaining carbon budget and make reaching climate goals harder. Still, the science involves uncertainties. Different studies sometimes give different estimates. Despite these challenges, it’s clear that natural feedbacks could significantly amplify ongoing human-caused warming.

    Practical Steps and Broader Impact

    Understanding these natural processes highlights the importance of cutting fossil fuel use and reducing emissions. Because the feedbacks respond to how much we warm the planet, decreasing human-caused emissions can also slow natural feedbacks. Although these processes are complex, tracking and predicting them helps us prepare better. Improving data collection from monitoring networks can give early warnings of rising emissions from wetlands and thawing soils. Taking action now makes it possible to stay within safer temperature limits and contributes positively to humanity’s ongoing journey toward a sustainable future.
